January 2025 News: A Message From the Artist

Another semester flew by!

My thesis work is well underway. I've got six small paintings finished and am working on a large canvas as well as on several three-dimensional works. I participated in five exhibitions last semester; there was Bodies in Motion at Culture Lab in Long Island City, GODZILLAS at LatchKey, an online show with dodomu gallery, and a group small works show at the Mesquite Fine Arts Center in Nevada. I also got access to the ContinuEd Project Space at 209 East 23rd Street, where I was able to showcase some of the ceramics work I'd made in a continuing education class the previous semester. Feel free to check out the blog post!

September 26 opening at Culture Lab, complete with live music and entertainment. My work, Bear Creek, pictured at far right.

October 16 GODZILLAS opening at LatchKey Gallery, 173 Henry Street. Kevin's Kid: Ward to Keep Out Critics installed at center. I'm so glad we all got the chance to show together.

Several of my works on display for a month at SVA's ContinuEd Project Space.

In between shows, I kept busy with artist studio visits, talks, fairs, and openings. There was a lot of wonderful happenstance involved. I was able to meet Joel Shapiro at his talk at Pace, for example, then tour his studio several weeks afterward. I viewed the work of Loren Munk at Ruttkowski;68 and then was happily introduced to him at an opening for Jim Clark and Cordy Ryman at Helm Contemporary. I saw professor Dara Birnbaum's work at the grand opening of Marian Goodman's new location, and the gallerist who conducted that tour invited us to visit her own studio. Oh, and I photographed Scott Reeder's work at Armory, not yet familiar with his name, and shortly afterward a classmate handed me one of Reeder's books after a crit session. One thing's for sure, the art community is getting a bit smaller, and it's wonderful to start putting names to faces.

Not only is there the thesis to contend with this semester, I've also begun the job search for next academic year. I'm very much interested in higher ed Foundations positions as well as in seeing what private and international schools have to offer this year. Gallery and museum jobs are on my radar as well. And where am I looking? Everywhere; although I have a house in Michigan, my kids have shared that they'd love to relocate to New York, and are open to following me overseas again. I'm attending a job fair in Cambridge next weekend and am going to stay busy with applications, submissions for grants and residencies, and open calls.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, I was interviewed recently by Bold Magazine. Please have a look! I was given the opportunity to share a bit about my work, and about how my unique life experiences have contributed to my international mindset.
